How I create my Pastel Paintings

&

Artist Statement

These drawings are improvisations. I simply create shapes and colors. I allow both my unconscious and conscious mind to interact with one another in creating the shapes and colors. The resultant painting appears to say something of an emotional nature. Also, the paintings seem to capture your attention and cause you to feel something emotional. Many people tell me that they continually see different things in my paintings and with each passing day, the things they see remain interesting and never boring. In otherwords, they never tire of looking at the painting. I am not really sure why the paintings grab one's attention in the way they do or why the paintings seem to bring out various emotions in the observers.

I can say that I too look at the paintings very often and always feel something inside when I do. I am not trying to brag about these drawings merely because of the fact that I created them. I am telling you the honest truth.

I have been told that I have my own style that is original and very unique. I do not draw houses, people, horses, sea shores or any of the things that a person formally trained in art usually paints. Those things are nice but are uninteresting to me. Also, I would rather go to a shore and experience it directly or look into a real living human being's eyes to experience that human completely rather than try to draw it. When I look at art, I am looking for something different, something that I have not seen before, something that touches my inner most being. I also enjoy the art of improvisation. I would rather simply create a series of shapes, colors, tonalities, shadings ..... and put them together in an improvisatory manner that in some magical way produces emotions in the observer.

I am self taught and as of this writing, August 2002, have been creating these works, in my free time, for about 7 years now.
